President Donald Trump offered a bizarre anecdote to try to support false claims that he lost the national popular vote in the US election because of voter fraud.
The New York Times on Wednesday published the accounts of three White House staffers who told the newspaper that Trump, during a meeting with lawmakers on Monday, retold a story the president claimed was shared with him by German champion golfer Bernhard Langer.
According to The Times, which said the three White House staffers were in the room when Trump told the story, Trump claimed that Langer was a supporter who tried to cast a ballot in Florida on Election Day.
Trump, the newspaper reported, said Langer was told he could not vote, while two other people "who did not look as if they should be allowed to vote," were able to cast provisional ballots.
As The Times describes it, Trump speculated that the two people who were allowed to vote looked as if they may have come from Latin American countries.
The Times' Glenn Thrush reported that a phone call with Langer's daughter indicated that Trump's anecdote was inaccurate.
Langer's daughter reportedly said the story was not about Langer, who is a German citizen and unable to vote in the US, but about a friend of the golfer.
"He is not a friend of President Trump's," the daughter said of her father, according to The Times.
"I don't know why he would talk about him," she added.
Trump was apparently using that anecdote to support his long-debunked claims that votes were cast by millions of people living in the US illegally.
The claims have been widely condemned by congressional leaders from both parties, including House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Trump's own attorneys have said there was no evidence of fraud in the November election.
Trump on Wednesday said he would order a voter-fraud investigation. On the same day he also announced measures to begin work on a wall at the US-Mexico border and to limit funds to US cities that shelter people living in the US illegally.
The president also moved to prevent immigrants from Muslim-majority Middle Eastern and African countries like Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Libya, and Yemen from the entering the US. Those moves sparked large protests on Wednesday night.
Manchester United have reportedly decided to keep Ashley Young this month.
The 31-year-old had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford due to a lack of regular playing time.
But the Manchester Evening News say Jose Mourinho has “no intention” of letting Young leave after Memphis Depay’s move to Lyon.
Ashley Young was open to a loan move due to his lack of game-time but United’s squad has been reduced to 25 following Memphis’ and Morgan Schneiderlin’s departures and Young is the only specialist left winger available to Mourinho.
West Brom, Swansea, Everton and Young’s former club Watford all registered interest in the midfielder, who ruled out a move to the Chinese Super League.
Italian attacker, Sebastian Giovinco, has said he rejected a loan move to Barcelona last season because he did not want to be a “ball boy” for their strikers.
The former Juventus forward admitted that he was offered a loan move to Camp Nou, but said there would have been “no point” going there to waste his time.
The Italian frontman joined Major League Soccer, MLS, side Toronto FC in 2015, and had the chance of a short-term loan deal during the MLS off-season period.
However, the 29-year-old said he had no interest in being a back-up player to Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez at Camp Nou.
He told Sky Sports Italia, “It’s true, in the past there was interest from Barcelona, but I’d have been a ball boy there. With those three stars in attack, I wouldn’t play at all.
“I wasn’t interested because I wanted to play. Neymar, Leo Messi and Luis Suarez would’ve played even with one leg and still made the difference, so there was no point in me being there.”
The striker has been linked with a possible move to the Chinese Super League, CSL, and he admits that the speculation interests him, but for the moment, he is happy with Toronto.
He added, “The market is really hotting up over there. They told me there is interest, so we’ll talk it over with Toronto and see. I am happy here, but we’ll see what the club wants to do.
“My agent told me there is an offer, but did not tell me which club. I certainly don’t miss Italy, as I am happy in Canada and have no intention of returning.
“Since I left Juventus, which remains the strongest team in Italy, I never thought about playing for another Italian club. I’m just not thinking about it.
“What still stings is losing the MLS Final last season.”
Steven Gerrard has admitted that he has mixed feelings ahead of his return to former club Liverpool, as he prepares for the first step in his coaching career.
The 36-year-old will take up the youth-team role in February, just three months after bringing an end to his 19-year playing career.
Gerrard, who made 710 appearances for Liverpool before departing in 2015 for a stint in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy, is ‘excited but nervous’ ahead of his impending return to Anfield.
“Liverpool are prepared to help me an awful lot. They want to help me to become a better coach or a better manager,” he told BBC Sport. “But at the same time I’ve got to commit to it and put in the hard work.
“With me and Liverpool there will always be an emotional pull. But the decision to go back as a coach and what that entails, I couldn’t really make that decision on sentiment or emotion because I’d have been doing it for the wrong reasons.
“I’m very excited but at the same time a little bit nervous and a little bit anxious because it’s a brand new role, one that I’m really looking forward to getting my teeth into.”
Gerrard also had the chance to take over at MK Dons in November, only to admit after talks that the job had arrived “too soon” in his coaching career.
“There’s no rush [to become a manager], no timescale,” he added. “The silly thing for me would be to rush and go in when I’m not ready. I’ve got incredible people around me and hopefully in the future there’ll be some exciting opportunities.
“I’ve a lot of dreams and aspirations to be the best I can be in terms of coaching and management – but we’ll have to wait and see if I’m going to be good enough.”
